    How the math works
    • Graduated tiers. Each volume band is priced on its own minutes and resets monthly. Encoding bands are 0–5K, 5–15K, 15–25K, then 25K+ minutes. Frequent storage bands are 0–50K, 50–150K, 150–250K, then 250K+. Delivery bands are 0–500K, 500K–1M, 1–2M, 2–6M, 6–10M, then 10M+. Each quality × resolution combination is tiered separately.
    • Free delivery. The first 100,000 delivered minutes each month are free on every plan. The calculator spreads them across resolutions in proportion to watch time, and they use up the first tier.
    • Plans. Pay as you go = usage − $20 credit. Launch = $20 + usage above $100. Scale = $500 + usage above $1,000. Credits reset each billing cycle and do not roll over. The calculator assumes the $20 Pay as you go credit does not stack with Launch or Scale, and that credits cover add-ons too.
    • Break-evens. Launch beats Pay as you go once usage is above $40/mo. Scale beats Launch above $580/mo. Above $1,000 of usage, Scale saves a flat $420/mo over Launch and $480/mo over Pay as you go. Mux offers negotiated Enterprise discounts above $3,000/mo.
    • Free plan. Up to 10 stored videos, on-demand only, with 100K delivery minutes. Here it counts as eligible only when there is no live, the library stays at 10 videos or fewer, delivery stays under 100K, and no paid add-ons are on.
    • Live recordings become on-demand assets at the live stream's quality and resolution and are stored at the normal storage rates. Live Plus/Premium tops out at 1080p.
    • Storage tiers. A new asset sits in Cold until its first play. It moves to Infrequent after 30 days without a play (−40%) and to Cold after 90 days (−60%). Infrequent and Cold are flat rates; only Frequent has volume bands. Mux's own calculator assumes 30/10/60. A back catalog people actively watch should use more Frequent.
    • MP4s. Every MP4 is stored as its own copy, so storage is charged per MP4 per video. Standard MP4s are free to create. Advanced MP4s cost a one-time preparation fee per minute, per MP4, by resolution ($0.008–$0.048/min, tiered). That fee is charged when the MP4 is made: on each month's new uploads and kept live recordings, and on a migrated library in month 1.
    • Where prices come from. Each day the calculator reads Mux's pricing docs (mux.com/docs/pricing/overview.md) and checks them against the rates built into mux.com/pricing. Where the two differ beyond rounding, the docs are used and the difference is reported. On 10 Oct 2026 they differed for Infrequent and Cold storage at 1440p and 4K, and for Basic. Only the docs match Mux's stated 40% and 60% discounts.
    • Not modeled: Mux Robots AI workflows (100K units free), multi-track audio, the one-month storage minimum on Basic, MP4s at a lower resolution than the video, audio-only assets and Enterprise contract pricing. GB equivalents use Mux's default of 3.33 Mbps.
